Water Phase Diagram

Water Phase Diagram. A phase diagram in physical chemistry, engineering, mineralogy, and materials science is a type of chart used to show conditions (pressure, temperature, volume, etc.) at which thermodynamically distinct phases (such as solid, liquid or gaseous states) occur and coexist at equilibrium. At its simplest, a phase can be just another term for solid, liquid or gas.

Water is a unique substance in many ways. If you have some ice floating in water, you have a solid phase present and a liquid phase. A "phase diagram" is a chart that shows the states, or "phases", that a substance will be in under various temperatures and pressures.

At typical room temperatures and pressure (shown as an 'x' below) water is a liquid.

At its simplest, a phase can be just another term for solid, liquid or gas.

A phase diagram shows the preferred physical states of matter at different temperatures and pressure. Four solid phases appear in this phase diagram (and only one liquid phase). Using a pressure/temp graph to examine the properties of water.
