Epidermis Diagram. It is in direct contact with the environment. There are several layers making up the epidermis. "Thick skin," found on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet, consists of five layers while "thin skin" consists of only four layers.
It is made of four or five layers of epithelial cells, depending on its location in the body.

Dermis and epidermis are basically protective outer layers The epidermis of animals is made up of stratified layers of flattened cells. Epidermis is a superficial layer of stratified epithelium which develops from ectoderm and acts as a physical and chemical barrier between the interior body and exterior environment.
